A woman in the US who "purposely coughed" on a one-year-old baby in an alleged racist attack is believed to be a teacher at a California school.
Mireya Mora said she was waiting in line at a Yogurtland in San Jose, California earlier this month when the woman got mad at her for standing too close. She told ABC7 the woman then took off her mask and coughed on her son's face.
Since the incident went public, San Jose's Oak Grove School District has identified itself as the woman's employer.
"We are aware of an incident allegedly involving one of our employees who was videotaped coughing on a baby at a local Yogurtland," the school district said in a statement. "We have been in contact with the San Jose Police Department (SJPD), which is investigating this incident and working to confirm the identity of the individual involved."
The statement said the employee identified as a person of interest is currently off work.
"There is no place in the Oak Grove School District for any employee who would deliberately cause harm to a child."
Lawyers say the woman who coughed in the child's face could face criminal charges, according to ABC7.
Mora and the boy weren't physically harmed in the incident but said her son was "traumatised".
"He does not sleep through the night," she told the ABC. He's been having nightmares. He's been getting very scared."
The SJDP confirmed on Friday an arrest has yet to be made.
"We are not sharing additional information at this time," Sgt Enrique Garcia told CNN. "The investigation is ongoing and we are following up on tips.
