President Uhuru Kenyatta has found himself on the wrong side of the same COVID-19 guidelines that he has been campaigning for and asking Kenyans to strictly adhere to them.
On Monday, August 11, 2020, the head of state visited Uthiru, Kibra and Mukuru kwa Njenga during groundbreaking ceremony for the construction three new Level 3 hospitals in the informal settlements.
The president witnessed groundbreaking for the construction of 16-bed capacity hospitals at Muthua in Uthiru and Kianda in Kibra as well as a 24-bed facility at Maendeleo Village in Mukuru kwa Reuben.
Photos shared by the State House showed the head of state had stopped to address the locals during the tour.
Although he was wearing a face mask, the rest of the locals seemed unbothered about the COVID-19 guidelines as they thronged around Uhuru's motorcade as it snaked through the slums.
The stipulation that people should maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 metres at all times was thrown out of the window and some of them were not even wearing a face mask.
The latest incident came barely days after another photo emerged on social media showing Health CS Mutahi Kagwe violating the social distancing rule.
The CS was captured in a photo standing on a straight line with some other officials without wearing his face mask and did not even observe social distancing.
The two leaders have been advocating for strict adherence to the guidelines in bid to curb spread of COVID-19 to the extent of limiting the number of people who can attend public gatherings such as funerals, weddings, and churches.
